SAN JUAN CITY, Philippines — Four people were injured after a metal structure supporting stage lights and audio equipment collapsed during preparations for an event at the Filoil Centre in San Juan City on Friday, October 30.
Three of the injured have since been discharged from the hospital, while one remained under medical care for a head injury, according to the latest available reports.
San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora confirmed that the local government and police are investigating the incident to determine what caused the collapse and whether anyone should be held accountable.
The accident occurred at around 9:45 a.m. as workers were preparing equipment for a religious gathering organized by a private group.
According to San Juan City Police Chief Col. Anthony Gantang, two of the injured were members of the religious organization, while the other two were workers involved in setting up equipment, including an LED display.
Emergency personnel from the city government, police and Philippine Red Cross responded to the scene.
All four injured individuals were brought to Cardinal Santos Medical Center for treatment.
Three sustained minor injuries and were subsequently discharged. One person remained hospitalized for further evaluation and treatment.
Private event equipment involved
The San Juan City government clarified that the collapsed trusses were temporary installations arranged by the event organizer through its own technical supplier.
The organizer had rented the venue, which is independently operated by HOME Inc.
City officials said the supplier had no contractual relationship with the local government.
The city government also maintained that the Filoil Centre’s permanent structure remained sound, distinguishing the temporary equipment that collapsed from the arena itself.
However, investigators have yet to establish the exact cause of the accident.
Authorities seek accountability
Zamora said the city government had contacted the event organizer and requested a full report on the incident.
Police are examining the circumstances surrounding the equipment installation to determine whether safety lapses or other factors contributed to the collapse.
The local government emphasized that public safety remains its priority as authorities assess the incident and its consequences.
The religious gathering was subsequently moved to a venue in Makati City.
As the investigation continues, authorities have not announced a final determination of responsibility.
The incident has raised questions about safety procedures during event preparations, particularly the installation and securing of temporary overhead equipment in venues used for large gatherings.
