A bizarre accident that left a Winnipeg woman trapped shoulder-deep in a hole has taken an unexpected turn, becoming the inspiration for a Halloween costume.
Christine Keilback, 58, found herself at the center of an unusual incident last April when she fell into a hole along a boulevard near her home in Winnipeg, Manitoba. She was rescued by emergency crews after spending approximately 40 minutes trapped underground.
Months later, her experience inspired Vanessa Desorcy to recreate the incident as a Halloween costume, complete with a similar jacket, hairstyle and eyeglasses. Desorcy even added a ring of leaves around her arm to represent the hole where Keilback had become stuck.
The two women finally met outside Keilback’s home, where she welcomed the costume with laughter and amusement, praising its attention to detail.
The original incident happened on April 25 when Keilback was dropped off by friends after watching a movie. As she stepped onto the boulevard, the ground suddenly gave way, leaving her unable to climb out as the surrounding soil continued to crumble.
A technical rescue team from the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service eventually used a frame, winch and safety straps to lift her to safety.
The City of Winnipeg later explained that the opening was linked to a previously removed catch basin and connecting pipe. A similar condition was also discovered across the road.
Keilback’s experience has since become an unexpected source of Halloween humor, even inspiring a lawn display created by her neighbours.
Despite the frightening circumstances, the Winnipeg resident continues to take the experience in stride, reminding people to stay safe and watch where they step.
