British actor Patrick Stewart, best known for portraying Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek and Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men franchise, has died at the age of 86.

Stewart passed away Wednesday at his home in Los Angeles, according to a statement released by his longtime spokesperson on Thursday. His wife, musician Sunny Ozell, was by his side.

The statement said the actor had been living with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy body dementia following a brief illness.

He became a household name through his portrayal of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the science-fiction television series Star Trek: The Next Generation, which ran from 1987 to 1994. His commanding performance made him one of the franchise’s most recognizable figures, a role he later reprised in several films and the series Star Trek: Picard.

Stewart also reached a new generation of moviegoers as Professor Charles Xavier, the leader of the X-Men, appearing in multiple installments of the popular superhero film franchise.

But long before his Hollywood success, Stewart established himself as a respected Shakespearean performer. He joined the Royal Shakespeare Company in the 1960s and appeared in numerous stage productions, eventually earning recognition on Broadway and London’s West End.

Born in Mirfield, West Yorkshire, England, in 1940, Stewart built his acting career from humble beginnings. His contributions to drama were recognized in 2010 when Queen Elizabeth II knighted him.

Beyond his performances, Stewart was involved in humanitarian causes, supporting human rights, refugees, survivors of domestic violence, veterans and animal welfare initiatives.

His passing prompted tributes from colleagues and fellow actors, including members of the Star Trek and X-Men franchises, who remembered him for his talent, generosity and lasting influence on the entertainment industry.

Stewart remained active in the industry until his final years, with projects including the upcoming Marvel film Avengers: Doomsday, in which he was set to reprise his role as Professor X.

He is survived by his wife, Sunny, and his two children from his first marriage.

His legacy lives on through the many characters he brought to life, from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise to the world of the X-Men, as well as his celebrated contributions to classical theatre.
