Even in Death, Poverty Offers No Rest

For many Filipino families, losing a loved one does not only mean facing grief. It also means confronting expenses that can be difficult to afford, turning the final farewell into another financial struggle.

From funeral services and caskets to cemetery lots, cremation and interment fees, the cost of death can reach thousands or even hundreds of thousands of pesos, depending on the arrangements and resting place chosen.

Even basic funeral services require families to prepare money for body preparation, transportation, embalming and viewing arrangements. Additional expenses such as food for visitors, flowers, religious services and funeral vehicles can further increase the bill.

Finding a place to lay a loved one to rest presents another challenge. Private memorial parks can require substantial payments for burial lots, while public cemeteries offer more affordable alternatives, including apartment-style tombs that may involve recurring lease fees.

For families already struggling to meet daily needs, these expenses can mean borrowing money, seeking donations or relying on assistance from relatives and local communities.

Cremation may provide another option, but it is not necessarily inexpensive. Families may still need to pay for the cremation itself, an urn and a permanent resting place for the ashes.

Government assistance is available to qualified families through programs such as the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations. However, access to financial support depends on eligibility requirements and the submission of necessary documents.

The financial burden also highlights the importance of planning ahead. Pre-need memorial plans and other funeral coverage options can help families prepare for expenses, although these come with varying prices, payment terms and service inclusions.

Ultimately, the cost of saying goodbye reveals another dimension of poverty in the Philippines. For families with limited resources, the struggle does not end with the loss of a loved one. Even providing a dignified final resting place can become a financial challenge.
