Filipino talent is taking center stage at the 30th Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF30), with a Philippine historical thriller selected as the closing night feature and Filipino-Canadian creators contributing to the festival’s independent film lineup.
Leading the Filipino representation is Sisa, directed by acclaimed Filipino filmmaker Jun Robles Lana. The film is scheduled to close the festival on November 14, 2026, bringing a story rooted in Philippine history to an international audience in Vancouver.
Set during the Philippine-American War, Sisa follows a survivor who becomes a spy for Filipino revolutionaries, weaving together themes of revenge, espionage and the struggle for freedom. The film also features veteran actress Hilda Koronel, whose involvement has drawn attention to the production.
Filipino-Canadian filmmakers are also contributing to the festival’s diverse program. Vancouver-based multidisciplinary artist Kayla Bergeron is featured in the animated lineup with The Deadline, a work shaped by themes of nostalgia and Filipino heritage.
Beyond the screenings, Filipino creatives are helping nurture emerging talent through festival initiatives. Filmmaker, writer and composer Harley Maranan, originally from Manila, and creator Josh Aries are among those associated with VAFF’s Mighty Asian Moviemaking Marathon (MAMM) and other festival programs supporting independent storytellers.
Now marking its 30th year, VAFF continues to provide a platform for Asian and Asian-diaspora filmmakers to share stories that reflect their cultures, identities and experiences. Filipino participation in this year’s edition highlights the range of talent contributing to the region’s independent film community, from established directors to emerging creators working in Canada.
With Sisa closing the festival and Filipino-Canadian artists represented across its programming, VAFF30 offers a significant opportunity to bring Philippine stories and diaspora perspectives before Vancouver audiences.
