Filipino-Canadian politician Mable Elmore has secured another term representing Vancouver-Kensington, holding the riding for the BC New Democratic Party (NDP) in British Columbia’s provincial election on October 24.
Elmore received 7,275 votes, or 46.63 per cent of the valid ballots, according to Elections BC’s initial count. Conservative Party candidate Aron Lageri placed second with 5,596 votes, while Green Party candidate Adam Hawk received 2,706.
Elmore won by 1,679 votes over Lageri, maintaining the NDP’s hold on the East Vancouver riding. The initial count recorded results from all 65 advance and final voting ballot boxes combined, with the election authority noting that the results were not yet official at that stage.
First elected to the provincial legislature in 2009, Elmore has represented Vancouver-Kensington through successive elections. Her latest victory extends her tenure in the Legislative Assembly and marks her sixth electoral win in the riding.
Elmore made history as the first person of Filipino heritage elected to British Columbia’s Legislative Assembly, becoming a prominent Filipino-Canadian figure in provincial politics.
Her re-election comes amid a closely watched provincial contest that will determine the composition of the 93-member legislature and the next government of British Columbia.
The Vancouver-Kensington result also highlights the continued participation of candidates from diverse backgrounds in the province’s political landscape, as voters chose their representatives for the next parliamentary term.
