Senator Risa Hontiveros has filed a measure seeking to penalize violence against women in politics, aiming to strengthen protections for women who face threats, harassment and other forms of abuse because of their political participation.
The proposed legislation seeks to address acts that discourage women from running for public office, performing their official duties or participating in political and electoral activities.
Violence against women in politics can take various forms, including physical attacks, intimidation, sexual harassment, threats and gender-based abuse online. Such acts can undermine women’s ability to participate freely in public life and exercise their political rights.
Hontiveros has advocated measures to promote women’s representation and protect their participation in governance. The proposed bill seeks to establish clearer legal safeguards and penalties for those found responsible for prohibited acts.
The measure also highlights the importance of ensuring that women in public service, political candidates, campaign workers and other participants can carry out their roles without fear of gender-based threats or coercion.
The proposal comes amid broader legislative efforts to address gender-based violence and strengthen women’s access to justice. Lawmakers have also pursued measures to combat harassment and abuse facilitated by digital platforms.
If enacted, the bill would provide a legal framework specifically addressing violence against women in politics, complementing existing protections against gender-based violence and discrimination.
The measure must still undergo the legislative process before it can become law.
