West Philippine Sea likely to emerge as key issue in 2028 elections

The West Philippine Sea could become a major issue in the 2028 national elections, as the next administration will inherit the country’s ongoing territorial and maritime disputes with China.

Defense Secretary Gilberto “Gibo” Teodoro Jr. said the issue should be part of the national discussion as voters choose the country’s next president.

Teodoro also warned that the country’s current efforts to strengthen its defense and protect its maritime interests could lose momentum after the 2028 elections, depending on the policies of the next administration.

He noted that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has established mechanisms within the Armed Forces of the Philippines to sustain programs aimed at strengthening the country’s sovereignty and territorial defense.

But because the president has significant authority over foreign policy, Teodoro said a change in leadership could also mean a change in direction or pace in the country’s approach to the West Philippine Sea.

The issue comes as the Philippines continues to monitor Chinese coast guard and naval activity in the area. Earlier this month, the AFP reported monitoring 48 Chinese vessels in key features of the West Philippine Sea, including Bajo de Masinloc, Ayungin Shoal, Escoda Shoal and Pag-asa Island.

With the 2028 elections approaching, the West Philippine Sea is therefore shaping up not only as a security concern, but also as a question voters may be asked to consider: Should the Philippines maintain its current approach to defending its maritime rights, or pursue a different direction under the next administration?
