BIR tax refunds nearly double to P23.67 billion from January to September

PHILIPPINES – The Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) released significantly more tax refunds to taxpayers and businesses from January to September this year, with total payouts nearly doubling from the same period last year.

The BIR said refunds reached P23.67 billion, up from P12.42 billion recorded during the same period last year.

The agency attributed the increase to the accelerated processing and release of approved tax refunds, allowing taxpayers and businesses to receive money that had already been determined to be due to them.

BIR Commissioner Charlito Mendoza said the refunds are part of the government’s effort to create a more business-friendly environment, consistent with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive.

Mendoza said releasing approved refunds without unnecessary delays can help businesses manage operating expenses, preserve cash flow and sustain operations, particularly amid the ongoing energy crisis.

He also stressed that tax administration involves not only collecting revenues properly due to the government but also returning money properly owed to taxpayers once their claims have been evaluated and approved.
