VANCOUVER — Vancouver’s Filipino community has taken another step toward securing a dedicated cultural home with the preview of an Interim Filipino Cultural Centre at Library Square.

The Filipino Legacy Society of Canada (FLS) held a community preview of the temporary centre on September 13, according to ReyFort Media, ahead of its full operational opening.

The space is located at the Vancouver Public Library’s Central Library complex and measures about 1,535 square feet, based on City of Vancouver documents.

FLS Chair Warren Flandez said the interim centre would provide a dedicated gathering place while work continues toward a permanent Filipino Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

“While Filipino Canadians are a core part of Vancouver’s diverse fabric, until now, we have not had a cultural home in our city,” Flandez said, as quoted by ReyFort Media. “For decades, we have had to gather in borrowed spaces.”

Flandez said the temporary centre is expected to provide space for Filipino groups to celebrate and showcase their heritage, while also allowing community organizations to meet and discuss programs and services for a future permanent centre.

The space, however, is not yet open for regular community use. ReyFort Media reported that renovations are still ongoing and that an official inauguration will be announced in the coming weeks.

Vancouver Councillor Lenny Zhou described the September 13 event in a Facebook post as the “grand opening” of the interim centre and called it an important step while work continues toward a permanent facility.

The interim centre is part of a broader City of Vancouver effort to establish a Filipino cultural facility.

In a June 5 memo, city staff identified a vacant retail unit at Library Square as a suitable temporary location for the Filipino Legacy Society and proposed a two-year nominal lease for the 1,535-square-foot space.

According to ReyFort Media, Vancouver City Council approved the lease on July 29, 2026, for a two-year period subject to renewal.

The initiative builds on a December 10, 2025 council decision directing city staff to work with Filipino stakeholders to identify an interim space while plans for a permanent cultural centre move forward.

That motion was jointly advanced by Mayor Ken Sim and Zhou.

The effort also follows an earlier 2023 council motion supporting the creation of a Filipino Cultural Centre in Vancouver.

FLS said it will continue working with municipal, provincial and federal governments, along with Filipino community organizations, toward establishing a purpose-built permanent centre.

The Library Square site is expected to serve as the community’s interim cultural home once renovations are completed and the facility formally opens for use.
