Diana Fox Carney named Canada’s first Ocean Envoy

CANADA – Diana Fox Carney, the wife of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, has been appointed as Canada’s first Ocean Envoy, taking on a new role focused on ocean conservation and international cooperation.

Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson announced the appointment on September 16. Fox Carney will also chair the 12th Our Ocean Conference, which Canada will host in Halifax in 2027.

In her new role, Fox Carney is expected to connect ocean conservation, climate action, Indigenous leadership, economic resilience and maritime security as Canada prepares to host the international conference.

The position is voluntary and unpaid, according to Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The Our Ocean Conference focuses on securing voluntary commitments on issues including marine protected areas, pollution, climate change, sustainable fisheries and maritime security.

Fox Carney is a British-Canadian economist with experience in climate policy and advising companies and investors on the transition toward a more climate-resilient economy. She holds master’s degrees in agricultural economics from Oxford University and international relations from the University of Pennsylvania.

The 2027 conference is expected to bring together governments, Indigenous leaders, scientists, industry groups and other organizations to discuss measures aimed at protecting oceans and promoting their sustainable use.

The appointment comes as Canada prepares to use the international gathering to highlight its approach to ocean protection, marine science, sustainable fisheries and Indigenous-led stewardship.
