The Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) and Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) have thrown their support behind tennis star Alex Eala, who could face sanctions from the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) for choosing to represent the Philippines at the 2026 Asian Games.
Eala is set to compete in the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, instead of playing in the WTA 1000 China Open, which falls within the same period. Her decision to prioritize the national team could expose her to penalties under WTA rules.
PSC Chairman Patrick Gregorio said the commission fully supports Eala’s decision, stressing that representing the country remains a priority for the Filipina tennis star.
The possible sanctions have drawn concern from Philippine sports officials, particularly because Eala is one of the country’s leading international tennis players. Reports have said the penalties could include a fine and the loss of ranking points for missing the mandatory WTA event.
The issue comes as Philippine athletes prepare for the Asian Games, where Eala is expected to be among the country’s major medal hopes. Her participation also highlights the tension athletes can face when international professional commitments overlap with national-team duties.
For Philippine sports officials, however, the message is clear: Eala has the backing of the country’s sports leadership as she chooses to represent the Philippines on the Asian Games stage.
