26 Filipino seafarers safe, awaiting repatriation after Ukraine ship attack

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-six Filipino seafarers are safe and awaiting repatriation after their vessel was attacked while docked in Ukraine, according to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

The Filipino crew members were aboard the bulk carrier Gingo, which was attacked on September 2. By September 4, all 26 had safely disembarked from the vessel and were confirmed unharmed.

The DMW said the seafarers are awaiting transit to Moldova before arrangements are completed for their return to the Philippines.

The Philippine Embassy in Warsaw, the Philippine diplomatic post in Kyiv and the Migrant Workers Office in Prague are coordinating with authorities, the shipowner and the vessel’s licensed manning agency to process the crew members’ travel documents and facilitate their repatriation.

Labor Attaché Llewelyn Perez said authorities are also working to complete the necessary documentation for the seafarers’ onward travel.

The DMW added that the crew members’ immediate needs are being addressed while they await their return home.

The agency assured their families that Philippine authorities will continue monitoring the seafarers and coordinating their safe repatriation.
