House prosecution holds off on move to lower 16-vote threshold in Sara Duterte trial

The House prosecution panel is not yet seeking to lower the 16-vote threshold needed to convict Vice President Sara Duterte, keeping the issue off its immediate agenda as the impeachment trial continues.

The panel had earlier raised the possibility of bringing the voting requirement before the Supreme Court, particularly amid questions over the number of senator-judges available to participate in the proceedings.

For now, however, the prosecution is choosing to focus on presenting its evidence rather than challenge the existing threshold.

The Senate impeachment court requires 16 of the 24 senators to vote for conviction under the current constitutional interpretation.

The issue has drawn attention as the trial enters its later stages, with the prosecution also working to speed up proceedings and complete its presentation of evidence.

The House prosecution has previously said other parties may raise the threshold issue before the Supreme Court, but it will not initiate the move itself at this point.

For the prosecution, the immediate priority remains finishing the case and allowing the Senate impeachment court to eventually decide on the charges against Duterte.
