MANILA — The Philippines recorded 5,486 leptospirosis cases from Jan. 4 to Aug. 26, 2026, as health authorities prepared for a possible rise in hospital admissions following widespread flooding.

The Department of Health said the latest total was 23 percent lower than the 7,163 cases recorded during the same period in 2025.

Despite the decline, the DOH remains on heightened alert because leptospirosis infections may emerge days or weeks after exposure to contaminated floodwater. An increase in hospitalizations is expected over the next two weeks.

The National Capital Region, Cagayan Valley and Central Luzon recorded some of the country’s highest cumulative case counts.

In Metro Manila, 521 patients had been recorded as of Aug. 27, including 158 admitted to San Lazaro Hospital.

To manage a possible influx of patients, the DOH opened dedicated leptospirosis fast lanes in 33 government hospitals across affected regions.

The agency also strengthened referral networks among hospitals to prevent overcrowding. Specialized facilities such as the National Kidney and Transplant Institute and Philippine General Hospital will coordinate the transfer of recovering patients, freeing intensive care and dialysis equipment for severe cases.

The DOH advised people who waded through floodwater to seek medical evaluation within 24 to 48 hours, even without visible wounds or symptoms.

Early diagnosis and treatment within two days of the onset of symptoms may help prevent hospitalization and serious complications, according to the agency. Untreated leptospirosis can lead to kidney failure, liver damage, meningitis or multiple-organ failure.

Government health centers, local facilities and DOH hospitals have supplies of preventive antibiotics such as doxycycline. These medicines require a physician’s prescription and should not be taken without medical guidance.
