Chinese Embassy, PCG official clash over maritime claims

PHILIPPINES – The Chinese Embassy in Manila and Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Jay Tarriela traded accusations online over competing claims involving maritime activities in the West Philippine Sea.

The exchange began after the Chinese Embassy issued statements disputing the Philippines’ account of recent developments in the disputed waters. Tarriela responded by challenging Beijing’s claims and defending the Philippine position.

The Chinese Embassy accused Philippine officials of spreading what it described as false information, while Tarriela maintained that the Philippines has the right to report and respond to activities affecting its maritime interests.

The online exchange reflects the continuing tension between Manila and Beijing over territorial and maritime claims in the West Philippine Sea.

The Philippines has repeatedly asserted its sovereign rights and maritime entitlements in the area, while China continues to maintain its own claims over disputed waters.

The dispute has also involved frequent encounters between Philippine and Chinese vessels, with both sides issuing competing accounts of incidents at sea.

The latest clash comes as the Philippine government continues to strengthen its presence in the West Philippine Sea and assert the country’s maritime rights amid ongoing tensions with China.
