Japan’s outgoing ambassador honored for role in strengthening Philippine defense ties

MANILA, Philippines — Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. conferred the Outstanding Achievement Medal on outgoing Japanese Ambassador Endo Kazuya, recognizing his contributions to strengthening the defense and strategic partnership between the Philippines and Japan.

During his term, Endo played a key role in the implementation of the Reciprocal Access Agreement, the conclusion of the Acquisition and Cross-Servicing Agreement, and the advancement of a Security Information Agreement between the two countries — a series of pacts that have expanded the scope of defense cooperation between Manila and Tokyo in recent years.

His tenure also saw stronger defense equipment and technology cooperation under Japan’s Official Security Assistance program, which included the turnover of five coastal radar systems to the Philippines.

Maritime security cooperation between the two countries was likewise strengthened during his term, including regular maritime cooperative activities conducted by the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force within the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone.

Teodoro said Endo’s contributions were significant in further solidifying the comprehensive strategic partnership and friendship between the Philippines and Japan.

Endo formally bid farewell after more than two years of service as Japan’s ambassador to the Philippines. No successor has been announced.
