ATLANTA – In a dramatic World Cup semi-final that reignited one of football’s most intense rivalries, Argentina defeated England 2-1 with two late goals to advance to the final against Spain.
Although Anthony Gordon had given England the lead in the second half and the match seemed decided, Argentina launched a relentless final assault; Lionel Messi first orchestrated the equalizer in the 85th minute by setting up Enzo Fernandez, and then provided the cross for substitute Lautaro Martinez to head in the winning goal in the 92nd minute.
This heartbreaking reversal dashed England’s hopes of reaching their first World Cup final since their 1966 triumph, while securing Lionel Messi and the reigning champions another chance at global glory.
Following the victory, Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni praised his team’s resilience and unity.
“From the bottom of my heart, these players led us to victory. I’m lost for words. A joy for our country, for our people,” he said.
