LONDON – Alex Eala’s magical two weeks at Wimbledon ended in heartbreak on Monday, but her fourth-round loss to Italy’s Jasmine Paolini only cemented her status as a rising force in tennis.

The 21-year-old Filipina, who had just stunned defending champion Iga Swiatek to become the first from her country to reach the Round of 16 at the All England Club, fought a grueling 2-hour-21-minute battle on Centre Court before falling 4-6, 6-4, 3-6.

Though she showed incredible resilience—staging a comeback to force a deciding third set after dropping the opener—narrow margins and a faltering first serve ultimately tipped the scales in favor of the more experienced 30-year-old Paolini, who had previously lost to Eala in Dubai earlier this year and was determined to get revenge.

The match turned on a crucial service break at 3-3 in the final set, where Eala blinked under pressure, committing a double fault and missing shots that former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki attributed to the “rawness” of youth on tennis’s biggest stages.

Despite the devastating finish, Eala walked off to a standing ovation.

While Paolini celebrated her third Grand Slam quarterfinal appearance, Eala’s breakthrough fortnight remains a defining moment in Philippine tennis history.

Her Wimbledon fairytale may have ended, but this is just beginning.
