MANILA, Philippines — The Duterte Panagutin Campaign Network (DPCN) commended on Wednesday the recent ruling of the ICC Appeals Chamber denying the appeal of detained former president Rodrigo Duterte which sought to challenge the tribunal’s jurisdiction over his crimes against humanity case.
The group cited the Appeals Chamber’s ruling that crimes committed while a state is a party to the Rome Statute remain subject to scrutiny before the ICC.
They also described the decision as a “monumental victory” for justice and a definitive blow against the culture of impunity.
“Today, the Appeals Chamber chose the side of the victims over the side of the perpetrators. We hope that the Pre-Trial Chamber will soon confirm the charges of murder against Duterte,” DPCN said in a statement.
“We remain steadfast in standing in solidarity with the victims of Duterte’s crimes. The path to justice is long, but today, it became significantly shorter.”
