NEW YORK CITY, USA — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday delivered an address at the 70th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW70) at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, underscoring the crucial role of women in various fields and democracies.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, Marcos stressed in his speech that genuine progress in a country cannot be measured by economic growth alone, but by whether women are given opportunities to be educated, kept safe, enabled to work and to lead, and recognized their agency to decide for their well-being.
Marcos called for women to be present “wherever decisions are made” from governance, business, science, diplomacy, and in peacebuilding, highlighting their role in finding solutions for the world’s great challenges.
“The Philippines stands ready to work with all nations to advance this cause. Because when women rise, societies rise with them. When women lead, nations move forward,” said Marcos.
He also urged nations to remain committed to unitedly confronting violence against women in all its forms, affirming the foundations of justice.
The CSW is the duly recognized principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women.
It is also the instrumental body in advancing the rights of women and girls; documenting the realities of their lives worldwide; and shaping global standards on gender equality.
