LOS ANGELES, California — Starting in 2029, the Oscars will be airing on the online video streaming platform YouTube after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) signed a multi-year deal with YouTube executives, lasting until 2033.

YouTube reportedly bested other suitors for its acquisition, including Disney/ABC, NBCUniversal, and Netflix, and is also believed to have spent over nine figures just to broadcast the film industry’s biggest night.

The Oscars’ current broadcaster for more than half a century, ABC, will continue its telecast until 2028, coinciding with the prestigious award-giving body’s centennial anniversary.

In a joint statement, Academy CEO Bill Kramer and Academy President Lynette Howell Taylor expressed the Academy’s collective exhilaration in light of its new venture with YouTube in reaching more audiences worldwide, to celebrate cinema and inspire more creatives.

“We are thrilled to enter into a multifaceted global partnership with YouTube to be the future home of the Oscars and our year-round Academy programming.”

“The Academy is an international organization, and this partnership will allow us to expand access to the work of the Academy to the largest worldwide audience possible—which will be beneficial for our Academy members and the film community. This collaboration will leverage YouTube’s vast reach and infuse the Oscars and other Academy programming with innovative opportunities for engagement while honoring our legacy. We will be able to celebrate cinema, inspire new generations of filmmakers, and provide access to our film history on an unprecedented global scale.”

Similarly, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan recognized the cultural impact of the Oscars across generations and said that it is their honor to broadcast such a celebration of storytelling and artistry.

“The Oscars are one of our essential cultural institutions, honoring excellence in storytelling and artistry,” he said. “Partnering with the Academy to bring this celebration of art and entertainment to viewers all over the world will inspire a new generation of creativity and film lovers while staying true to the Oscars’ storied legacy.”

Meanwhile, the upcoming 98th edition of the Oscars will premiere on March 15, 2026.
