OTTAWA, Canada — Prime Minister Mark Carney encouraged nationwide remembrance of the brave men and women who sacrificed their lives and years to be of service to the nation, upholding national values.

In his first Remembrance Day message since assuming the prime minister’s office, Carney underscored that “in an increasingly dangerous and divided world, remembrance is also vigilance” as the country’s and its allies’ sovereignty and security are not guaranteed.

“Today, as we pause to remember those acts of heroic service, we remember that our rights, our freedoms, our way of life were fought for and are won every day by Canadians who answer the call,” he said.

Among other activities in the country and abroad, poppy-clad Canadians from all walks of life gathered to pay their respects to fallen veterans at the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
