SEOUL – President Lee Jae Myung on Friday instructed the government to investigate cases of unfair treatment and wage arrears involving foreign workers and to prepare support measures.

During a meeting with senior aides, Lee stressed that foreigners residing in South Korea should not be subjected to unfair treatment in line with the nation’s cultural standards, regulations and international standing, presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung told reporters.

“In keeping with South Korea’s stature, having transformed from a trading nation into a cultural nation, foreigners staying in the country must not be subjected to unfair treatment,” Lee was quoted as saying by the spokesperson.

Lee ordered a systematic report on such cases and directed officials to devise and submit concrete support measures, according to Kang.

On Tuesday, he raised concerns over cases of wage arrears involving foreign workers and urged the justice ministry to consider measures such as deferring their departure until overdue wages are paid. (Yonhap)
