Just a week after its launch, Atin Ito’s “Teritoryo: West Philippine Sea Rap Challenge,” in partnership with Filipino rap collective Morobeats,” has already drawn a wave of entries from Filipinos across the country and around the globe, showcasing a surge of patriotic creativity and overwhelming public support for the campaign to defend the West Philippine Sea.
The overwhelming support for Atin Ito’s initiative comes at a time of escalating tension in the West Philippine Sea. China’s continued harassment of Filipino fisherfolk and frontliners has intensified in recent weeks, even resulting in two of its vessels colliding with each other. For Atin Ito, these events underscore why Filipinos must stand united to peacefully and creatively defend the West Philippine Sea.
Launched on August 11 to mark Buwan ng Wika, the online challenge invites Filipinos to rap, sing, or free-verse their own lyrics to Morobeats’ hit track “Teritoryo.” Beyond the music, the challenge aims to amplify the struggles of Filipino fisherfolk and frontliners facing harassment in the West Philippine Sea, turning art into a rallying cry for solidarity, unity and active citizenship.
Atin Ito Co-convenor and Akbayan Party President Rafaela “Paeng” David said the flood of entries shows how deeply the issue resonates with the public. “In just one week, we are already overwhelmed by the entries pouring in, proof that Filipinos are ready to turn rhythm into resistance. Each rap is not just music; it is a voice raised for our seas, our sovereign rights and territorial integrity.”
Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement (PRRM) President and Atin Ito Co-convenor Edicio Dela Torre added that the rap challenge is a modern spin on a long tradition of protest music. “Where we once sang protest hymns, today’s generation raps online. The message is the same: Filipinos will always find their beat in the struggle for freedom and dignity.”
The challenge has struck a chord, especially among young Filipinos and the overseas Filipino community, underscoring how music and advocacy transcend borders.
The “Teritoryo: West Philippine Sea Rap Challenge” runs until September 15, 2025, with winners to be announced shortly after. The contest is open to all Filipinos aged 13 and above, including OFWs and diaspora communities, who can submit entries via TikTok, Instagram Reels, Facebook Reels, or YouTube Shorts using the hashtags #TeritoryoRapChallenge and #WPSAtinIto, and tagging the official social media pages of Atin Ito and Morobeats.
David stressed that this surge of entries is more than just a viral trend, it signals the birth of a cultural movement. “This is cultural patriotism in motion. From seas to screens, Filipinos are showing that love of country can be rapped, remixed, and reimagined. Every beat that drops is a heartbeat for the West Philippine Sea.”
