Reported deaths from series of severe weather systems rise to 37

MANILA – The reported death toll from the combined effects of heavy southwest monsoon (habagat) rains and tropical cyclones Crising, Dante, and Emong has gone up to 37 as of Thursday, according to official government tally.

In its latest update, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said only two deaths have so far been confirmed — one in Northern Mindanao and another in the Caraga Region.

Still undergoing validation are 35 reported fatalities: nine in the National Capital Region, eight in Calabarzon, six in Western Visayas, three in Negros Island Region, three in the Cordillera Administrative Region, two in Central Luzon, two in Northern Mindanao, and one each in Mimaropa and Davao Region.

The severe weather disturbances also affected 2,121,645 families or 7,685,943 persons residing in 7,908 barangays nationwide, the NDRRMC said.

It added that 30,072 families are still being served inside 1,037 evacuation centers while another 23,588 families are being aided elsewhere.

The NDRRMC also recorded 46,655 damaged houses, of which 41,217 are classified as “partially damaged” and 5,488 as “totally damaged.”

Meanwhile, damage in agriculture was estimated at PHP1.96 billion and in infrastructure at PHP10.08 billion.
