MANILA – The Philippines has expressed concern over the ongoing dispute between fellow members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Thailand and Cambodia, calling for a peaceful resolution in accordance with international law.

In a statement late Saturday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the Philippines supports efforts to de-escalate tensions and is open to providing assistance to help restore peace between the two countries.

“The Philippines views with concern the ongoing conflict between our two fellow ASEAN Member States and urge them to resolve the dispute in accordance with international law and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” Marcos said.

“The Philippines stands ready to assist in any way to restore peace.”

The fighting between Thailand and Cambodia broke out early Thursday near the disputed Ta Moan Thom Temple, prompting regional and international calls for restraint.

The conflict eventually spread to at least six areas along the Thai-Cambodian border.

Latest local reports said the death toll from both sides has already reached 32, with more than 130 injured.

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok has advised Filipinos against traveling to seven Thai provinces – Ubon Ratchatani, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Buri Ram, Chantaburi, and Trat.
