A 45-year-old man with a gunshot wound died at the scene, say RCMP

A man has been charged with first-degree murder after a shooting death in the area of the Skky Hotel in Whitehorse, according to Yukon RCMP.

Police said they responded to a report of an injured man near the hotel on Friday at 11:39 p.m. They found an unnamed 45-year-old suffering from a gunshot wound, they said.

In a press release issued Sunday, police said despite life-saving efforts by emergency responders, the man died at the scene.

RCMP say Yukon resident George Ned Sydney, 38, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the case.

They said they were able to locate and arrest Sydney shortly after the shooting is alleged to have happened.

In a post on Facebook around 3 a.m. Saturday, police said they had a large presence in the area of the hotel and were asking anyone with dash cam footage between 11:30 p.m. and 12:30 a.m. to contact them.

They said the were interested in footage from the Skky Hotel, the Alaska Highway corridor and the Hillcrest subdivision.

Police said at the time there was no risk to public safety and by 10 a.m. Saturday morning they said they’d cleared the area.

Sydney is expected to appear in court later this week.
