MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Tuesday reminded the public to monitor the air quality index (AQI) in their areas and avoid the ill effects of pollution.

On Monday, haze was reported in certain areas of Quezon City and Rizal province caused by fire incidents.

The common indicators for AQI are Particulate Matter 10 micrometers (PM 10), and PM 2.5. They come from vehicle emissions, burning of trash wildfires or fire.

Irritations of the upper respiratory tract like the sinuses and throat are caused by PM 10.

Asthma attacks and cardiovascular problems are caused by PM 2.

The DOH advised individuals sensitive to air pollution or those with asthma, emphysema, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and similar conditions to be ready with their prescribed medications.

It also advised everyone to stay indoors to avoid or minimize exposure to haze or polluted outdoor air and to wear a face mask, preferably an N95 mask, if going outdoors is necessary.

The public may monitor the AQI in their areas through the local government units and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.
