ROME – The Vatican Press Office announced Wednesday that a recent X-ray of Pope Francis showed “slight improvements in the pulmonary infectious picture.”

The 88-year-old pontiff, who was discharged from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on March 23 after a 38-day stay, has begun what is expected to be a two-month recovery period from bilateral pneumonia.

According to the Vatican, Francis remains in good spirits, with a stable overall condition and normal blood test results.

His motor skills, breathing, and vocal use continue to improve, though high-flow oxygenation is still utilized primarily at night and as needed.

Despite his recovery, the Vatican said it is too early to determine whether the Pope will participate in Holy Week ceremonies. In the meantime, he continues to work from his desk.
