MANILA – Eva Air will ban the inflight use and charging of power banks and spare lithium batteries beginning March 1.

The move is for flight safety, the carrier said in a Facebook post on Wednesday.

The airline noted that power banks and spare lithium batteries are prohibited in checked-in baggage.

They must be placed in carry-on baggage and properly stored to prevent compression or damage.

Eva Air advised passengers to fully charge their devices before boarding.

Most airplane seats are equipped with AC power outlets and USB (Type A) ports, it added.

Earlier, the South Korean government announced the banning of power banks and e-cigarettes on overhead bins of Korean-owned airlines.

Reports said the measure takes effect March 1.

A fire broke out in a Hong Kong-bound Air Busan plane last month from Busan.

The fire was seen from an overhead compartment, suggesting that an electronic device or power bank could have caused it.
