MANILA – There must be increased information campaign against online love scams following the Philippine National Police Anti-Cybercrime Group (PNP-ACG) report of eight cases in January.

Last year, there were a total of 72 cases.

Senator Joel Villanueva is urging authorities to enhance public awareness while advocating for responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) in fighting cybercrime.

In a news release on Friday, he emphasized the need for technology to be a force for good, rather than a tool for exploitation.

“Technology should serve to uplift lives, not cause suffering. Let’s ensure AI is used for good,” he said.

He expressed concern over the increasing sophistication of the scams and their links to organized cybercrime.

“As we celebrate love today, some people continue to exploit others under false pretenses. This is both shameful and disheartening,” he said.

Villanueva also warned about Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators’ (POGOs) alleged involvement in fraudulent schemes, including online romance scams.

“This is exactly what we’ve been warning about.

These operations are adapting but their origins remain the same,” he said.

The senator urged the PNP-ACG to strengthen its efforts in educating the public on how to identify and avoid scams.

“Education is the first line of defense. We need stronger efforts to equip the public with the knowledge to protect themselves,” he added.
