MANILA – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. extended the term of Philippine National Police (PNP) Chief Gen. Rommel Francisco Marbil by four months, Malacañang announced Thursday.

Marcos approved the extension of Marbil’s government service through a memorandum dated Feb. 4, 2025, signed by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, according to a Presidential Communications Office news release.

Marbil was supposed to retire on Feb. 7, 2025 when he reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.

The President recently hinted at extending Marbil’s term to ensure stability during the upcoming midterm elections.

Marbil, the 30th PNP chief, is a member of the Philippine Military Academy’s Sambisig Class of 1991. He took command of the top police post on April 1, 2024.

In a message sent to the Philippine News Agency, Marbil thanked the President “for trusting and having confidence in the PNP under my leadership.”

“The 4 months extension will help us refine and improve the preparations we made for the election,” he said.

PNP spokesperson Brig. Gen. Jean Fajardo said the PNP fully supports the President’s decision to extend Marbil’s term as the country prepares for May 12 polls.

“The PNP will remain steadfast in its commitment sa ating sambayanang Pilipino ang PNP ang mangunguna na masiguro na magkakaroon ng isang mapayapa, maayos at credible na eleksyon (to Filipino people that the PNP will make sure to have peaceful, orderly and credible elections),” said Fajardo said in a press conference. (With Lloyd Caliwan/PNA)
