COLOGNE, Germany – Germany’s elderly population is rapidly increasing, and the government is predicting those aged 80 and above to reach 8 to 10 million by 2050 from around 6 million to date.

The government unveiled its “9th Aging Report,” projecting an increase in the number of elderly people in need of care as the population ages.

The number of people requiring care, which stood at 5.7 million in 2023, is predicted to reach 7.6 million by 2055.

The 250-page report, presented at a press conference in Berlin by Lisa Paus, Germany’s minister for family affairs, senior citizens, women and youth, focuses on the living conditions of elderly people.

It covers aspects such as financial security, employment, caregiving, health, housing, social connections, political involvement, and relationships.

Speaking at the launch of the report, Paus stated: “The aging report vividly shows how diverse the living realities of elderly people in Germany are. This diversity should not only be acknowledged but actively promoted.”

“Regardless of gender, origin, or social status, all elderly people should have equal opportunities for participation,” she said.

Paus also pointed out that many women with a migration background still face disadvantages.

She added that the ministry is working on strategies, including tackling loneliness, to strengthen social cohesion and ensure a comfortable and secure life for the elderly. (Anadolu)
