Fil-Can artist Esmie Gayo McLaren receives recognition in VAHMS Community Awards Celebration
The Vancouver Asian Heritage Month Society (VAHMS) recognized individuals who have made difference in Pan-Asian Canadian communities in its Community Awards Celebration held last Saturday, May 21.
One of those who were recognized is Filipino-Canadian visual artist Esmie Gayo McLaren for her “significant contribution to Pan-Asian Arts and Culture in the community and beyond.” She was nominated by VAHMS President Leticia Sanchez.
In her short speech after receiving the award, Esmie stressed that VAHMS has given the “most excellent and artistic platform” where people can learn more about each other and their cultures.
“I think that’s the key to understanding each other, and I think it helps us overcome fear of the unknown which is the basis of some of these racism slurs and things that have been happening a lot recently.”
It was also an honor for Esmie to be awarded along with the two other recipients: artist Lam Wong and Pacific Canada Heritage Centre- Museum of Migration founder Winnie Cheung.
In 2021, Esmie collaborated with North Van Arts for a poster titled, “Inspiring Connection & Friendship,” as a response to the anti-Asian graffiti in Lower Londsdale.
The poster, which was displayed at the event, showed Esmie’s artwork called, “Playful Blossoms,” which the artist said, “pays homage to children’s ability to easily accept others and forge friendships.” Through this, Esmie hopes to encourage connection and new friendships among everyone.
