Trailer of animated series ‘Trese’ released; set to premiere on Netflix in June
It was nighttime in Metro Manila and a train abruptly stopped in Guadalupe.
“Bigla na lang daw tumigil ang tren sa may bandang tulay ng Guadalupe at nakita na lang ng service crew na ganito (The train broke down over the Guadalupe bridge and the service crew found it like this),” a man narrated.
People seemingly shocked… a wave of supernatural beings attack… then the next thing happened: the inside of the train was covered by blood.
“Nagkalat ang dugo, walang mga bangkay. At sandamukal na missing persons reports (Lots of blood, no bodies. And a pile of missing persons reports),” the man continued.
This was how the trailer of the animated adaptation of Trese began to hype the audience as it was released by Netflix Philippines on Friday, May 21.
Trese, which is based on the Filipino graphic novel by Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo, follows the story of Alexandra Trese, the titular protagonist who finds herself going after evil supernatural forces around Manila.
The trailer showed creatures of Philippine folklore such as “nuno” that Alexandra greeted and “tiyanak” that she was hunting down. The Kambal (twins), Crispin and Basilio, also made appearances.
The two-minute trailer featured not only more of Trese characters but also the voices that will add soul to them.
Filipino actress Liza Soberano lent her voice to Alexandra in the Filipino language version of the series, while the voice of her counterpart, Filipino-Canadian actress Shay Mitchell, could be heard in the English dub.
The Filipino language voice cast includes Simon dela Cruz for the Kambal; Apollo Abraham for Captain Guerrero; Christopher Carlo Caling for Hank; Eugene Adalia for Anton Trese; Cheska Aguiluz for Miranda Trese; Christian Velarde for Nuno; Bryan Encarnacion for Datu Talagbusao; Nica Rojo for Ramona; Jo Anne Orobia-Chua for Emissary; Jose Amado Santiago for Marco; Steve dela Cruz for Maliksi; Rene Tandoc for Mayor Santamaria; Steffi Graf Bontogon-Mola for young, teen Alexandra; RJ Celdran for Santelmo, Señor Armanaz; Elyrey Martin for Ibwa, Dominic; and Steven Bontogon for Jobert.
Aside from Shay, other international stars with Filipino blood also joined the line-up of voice actors for the English language version. The voice cast consists of Griffin Puatu as Kambal, Bantay; Matt Yang King as Captain Guerrero, Dominic; Jon Jon Briones as Hank, Xa-Mul; Steve Blum as Datu Talagbusao, Ibwa; Carlos Alazraqui as Anton Trese, Santelmo; Manny Jacinto as Maliksi; Eric Bauza as Nuno the Snitch, Bagyon Lektro; Darren Criss as Marco; Nicole Scherzinger as Miranda Trese; Lou Diamond Phillips as Mayor Sancho Santamaria; Dante Basco as Bagyon Kulimlim; and Rodney To as Aswang market guard, man in drag.
But wait, the trailer was not only released in Filipino and English language versions.
The Twitter account of Netflix Japan Anime also shared the Japanese language version of it. Like in the English dub trailer, some Filipino lines, such as “tabi-tabi po” and “ibunyag ang nakatago,” were spoken as it is by the Japanese voice actress of Alexandra.
In 2018, Trese was announced to be among the anime series Netflix will be rolling out soon on its streaming platform. Then in 2019, Netflix teased the audience with a very first look at Trese, featuring Alexandra in two different images.
Produced by Shanty Harmayn and Tanya Yuson at BASE Entertainment and helmed by Jay Oliva, Trese will be coming to Netflix on June 11.
