Total lunar eclipse visible in Philippine skies tonight

MANILA – Filipinos can enjoy yet another celestial phenomenon as the total lunar eclipse will be visible in the sky tonight.

State weather forecaster Benison Estareja said Wednesday the partial lunar eclipse will begin at 5:44 p.m. (Philippine Standard Time), while the greatest eclipse will be visible from 7:11 p.m. to 7:25 p.m.

“Ito ‘yung time kung saan ‘yung shadow ng earth ay completely natatakpan ang buwan (This is when the earth’s shadow would completely cover the moon),” he added.

Estareja said the public could watch the total lunar eclipse on the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration’s (PAGASA) social media pages.

The entire event will be seen in South/East Asia, Australia, much of North America, South America, Pacific, Atlantic, Indian Ocean, Antarctica.

PAGASA said lunar eclipses are safe to watch and observers need not use any kind of protective filters for the eyes.

A pair of binocular will help magnify the view and will make the red coloration of the moon brighter.
