MANILA – A retired Catholic prelate on Friday praised the faithful for their unwavering devotion to the Black Nazarene in the midst of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.
Bishop Emeritus of Novaliches Antonio Tobias lauded the attendees of the Novena Mass at Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene in Manila on New Year’s Day.
“The beauty is even if there is a pandemic, we make sure that our devotion to the Black Nazarene will not be affected by the pandemic,” he said in his homily during the Mass. “Our devotion to the Black Nazarene should provide us strength to face the uncertainties in life and that is the grace and blessing we receive for our devotion. That is why in our expression of faith to Jesus, we say, we believe in Jesus, who became a man and has risen.”
At the same time, Tobias is hoping that the year 2021 to be peaceful, as well as the holding of the feast of the Black Nazarene this year.
He also reminded the people that the church is also celebrating World Day of Peace on Friday.
“God teaches us to respect the rights of the people, if we want peace, we should respect the rights of every human being for the benefit of others,” Tobias added.
Meanwhile, the Quiapo church said the novena for the feast of the Black Nazarene has started on Thursday at 5 pm. It will run until Jan. 8, a day before the feast.
Quiapo church officials earlier said there would be no traditional procession for this year’s observance due to the pandemic.
In January last year, the traditional ‘Traslacion’ was attended by some 4 million devotees. It was among the fastest in recent history as it lasted for only 16 hours.
