MANILA – The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) has raised alert level 2 in Mali due to the current political and security situation in the West African country.

Under alert level 2, Filipinos are instructed to restrict non-essential movements, avoid public places, and prepare for evacuation.

Alert level 2 is issued when there are threats to the life, security, and property of Filipinos arising from internal disturbances, instability, or external threats.

According to DFA’s latest figures, there are about 15 overseas Filipinos in Mali.

Filipinos in Mali are advised to coordinate with the Philippine Embassy in Rabat, Morocco for further advisories and may contact them at +212-694202178 or via email at rabat.pe@dfa.gov.ph.

Mali President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta was ousted in a coup d’état last August following protests in the capital Bamako for his resignation over alleged corruption and electoral malpractice.

Mali is now under an 18-month political transition. The transitional government, to be led by Mali’s former defense minister and now interim president Bah Ndaw, would be inaugurated on Sept. 25.

According to reports, Ndaw would lead the country for several months before returning Mali to civilian rule.
