MANILA – Senior citizens in the city of Manila will be given source of income under the Senior Citizen Livelihood Program.

Manila Mayor Francisco ‘Isko Moreno’ Domagoso, in a Facebook post on Thursday, said cloth clippings from the Face Masks Sewing Livelihood Program will be given new life by the senior citizens.

Bibigyan ng panibagong halaga ang mga pinagtabasang tela mula sa ating Face Masks Sewing Livelihood Program. Ito po ay muling tatahiin upang gawing basahan sa ilalim ng Senior Citizen Livelihood Program (cloth clippings from our Face Masks Sewing Livelihood Program will be given new value. These will be re-sewn to become rags under the Senior Citizen Livelihood Program)”, Domagoso said.

Currently, Barangay 905 and 898 both in Sta. Ana, Manila received the cloth clippings, as other barangays in the city are also requesting that they too, be given the same.

Domagoso said this is to give an opportunity for those senior citizens who know how to sew to have a source of income amid the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) pandemic.

The cloth clippings are given for free to the barangays and were even delivered to them through the Department of Public Service (DPS).

Meanwhile, as of August 26, the city government has already distributed some 712,721 pieces of face masks through the Face Masks Sewing Livelihood Program of the Public Employment Service Office (PESO)-Manila.

Domagoso said the project has already created a hundred jobs in the city.

The goal, he said, is to be able to distribute one million free face masks to Manila residents.

Domagoso reminded every Manilenyo to wear face mask, especially in public places, to mitigate the spread of Covid-19.

In April, Domagoso signed City Ordinance 8627 requiring the mandatory use of face masks in all public places in the nation’s capital.

This is in line with the city government’s CODE Covid-19 (Contain and Delay) action plan in response to the global pandemic.

The ordinance states that all persons within the territorial jurisdiction of the city of Manila are required to wear face masks.

Residents who fail to comply with the ordinance may be fined PHP1,000 for the first offense, PHP2,000 for the second offense, and PHP5,000 for the third offense.

Violators may also be penalized with one-month imprisonment for the third and subsequent offense.
