MANILA – The Department of Health (DOH) on Sunday reported 3,420 new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) infections, raising the overall tally to 161,253.

The DOH said the additional cases reported were based on the total Covid-19 tests done by 99 out of 105 operational laboratories.

Majority of the newly announced cases were from the National Capital Region (NCR) with 2,091 cases, Laguna with 263 cases, Cavite with 149 cases, Batangas with 137 cases and Rizal with 106 cases.

These areas are currently under the second-most stringent modified enhanced community quarantine.

“Of the 3,420 reported cases today, 2,745 or 80 percent occurred within the recent 14 days (August 3-16, 2020). The top regions with cases in the recent two weeks were NCR with 1,594 or 58 percent, Region 4A (Calabarzon) with 619 or 23 percent and Region 7 (Central Visayas) with 86 or 3 percent,” the DOH said.

The department also reported 40,397 new recoveries and 65 deaths, bringing the total number of recoveries to 112,586 and the number of deaths to 2,665.

“Of the 40,397 total new recoveries, 914 were based on what was reported while 39,483 were time-based recoveries. Of the 65 deaths, 29 or 45 percent in August, 29 or 45 percent in July and 7 and 11 percent in June and the deaths were from NCR with 46 or 71 percent, Region 7 (Central Visayas) with 13 or 20 percent, Region 4A (Calabarzon) with three or 5 percent, Region 3 (Central Luzon) with one or 2 percent, Region 5 (Bicol) with one or 2 percent and Region 11 (Davao) with one or 2 percent,” the DOH said.

It added that some 85 duplicates were removed from the total case count and of these, five recovered cases have been removed.

Moreover, there were 15 cases previously reported as recovered but after final validation, these were 12 deaths and three active cases.

The health department also reported 46,002 active cases — about 90.7 percent are mild, 6.7 percent are asymptomatic, 1.1 percent are severe, and 1.5 percent are critical patients.

As of Saturday, the 81 licensed reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) laboratories and 27 licensed GeneXpert laboratories have conducted a total of 1,896,936 tests nationwide.

The DOH said it has an 18,700 total bed capacity dedicated to Covid-19 patients.

Occupied are about 52 percent of 1,600 intensive care unit beds; 46 percent of 12,200 isolation beds; and 51 percent of 4,900 ward beds.

About 31 percent of 2,100 ventilators are in use.
