MANILA – The Department of Education (DepEd) on Monday started its month-long enrollment in public schools nationwide.

DepEd Undersecretary Nepomuceno Malaluan said the enrollment coincides with the start of Brigada Eskwela (BE) and Oplan Balik Eswela (OBE).

“Nagkaroon ng early registration ng bandang Enero pero minarapat natin magkaroon ng revalidation and reconfirmation dahil iba ang sitwasyon ngayon (In January, there had been an early registration but we decided on having a revalidation and reconfirmation because the situation is different now),” Malaluan said during the BE and OBE national virtual kick-off.

Remote enrollment is allowed, from June 1-15. In the absence of physical enrollment, class advisers of learners from the previous school year would coordinate with the learners or their parents, Malaluan said.

Earlier the DepEd, in its Department Order No. 008, said physical enrollment would be allowed in the third week of June, if needed and properly coordinated with the school’s local government unit.

“Mayroong survey na gagawin kasabay ng enrollment, upang malaman ang kalagayan ng mag-aaral at ng kanyang tahanan, para maging gabay kung anong angkop na (There’s a survey during the enrollment which aims to know the situation of the learners in their homes, this [survey] will be used as guide for the) learning modality [that would fit them],” Malaluan said.

Students, either incoming or transferees from private schools whose data or information are not yet part of the DepEd’s database, are advised to contact the department’s hotline numbers.

The department has drafted the Basic Education-Learning Continuity Plan (BE-LCP) which would serve as guide of schools in the delivery of education amid the Covid-19 health crisis.

The plan presents the learning modalities where blended or distance learning is a big part; schools’ and parents’ preparation for blended or distance learning; and preparation of required health standards if face-to-face classes would be allowed.

“Isa sa mahahalagang bahagi ng planong ito ay pagsuring muli ng kabuuang K to 12 curriculum upang tukuyin ang Most Essential Learning Competencies [MELCs]. Mula sa 14,171 na learning competencies o kaalaman at kakayahang dapat matutunan sa lahat ng antas at learning areas, ay naibaba sa 5,689 MELCs, o pagbawas ng (One important part of this plan is the review of the whole K to 12 curriculum to determine the MELCS. From 14,171 learning competencies or knowledge and learning skill at all levels and learning areas, they have been reduced to 5,689 MELCs, or reduction by) 60 percent,” Malaluan said.

Earlier, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones said that apart from the online platform DepEd Commons, blended or distance learning may be delivered through printed modules, radio, television and other learning systems.
