MANILA — As the Christian community celebrates Easter Sunday, Malacañang urged Filipinos to “love one another,” especially in these trying times that the country is fighting coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).

“‘Love one another’ was what the Redeemer had taught the Christian world, and this is the most fitting time that we embrace and practice this teaching, that even the non-Christians and the agnostics can relate. For it is only in loving one another can we protect each other from this scourge of a disease,” Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said in a statement.

Easter Sunday is deemed the most important day in the Catholic’s liturgical calendar as it commemorates the day Christians believe Jesus rose from the dead.

Panelo hopes that everyone would enjoy a “meaningful and faithful” Easter Sunday.

He said Christ’s resurrection “symbolizes the truism that after going through pain and suffering there will be healing, that after a storm a new dawn beckons, and that after this pandemic of a disease there is a new tomorrow that awaits us and the world.”

“As we struggle to overcome the worst calamity we face as a nation, let us still thank the Almighty for sparing the rest of humanity who will, like the Phoenix, be reborn from ashes and build a new order of love and peace among mankind, coming from what it seems to be a spiritual cleansing that we are all undergoing,” Panelo said.

Panelo was also confident that like Christ, the country would prevail over Covid-19 pandemic.

“Christ has risen! So, will we rise from this tragedy that has befallen us,” he said.

The Philippines has so far recorded 4,428 Covid-19 infections.

Around 247 Covid-19 patients have died, while some 157 infected individuals have recovered from the disease.

The entire Luzon was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) until April 30 to curb the spread of Covid-19.

ECQ was also imposed in several areas in Visayas and Mindanao that have confirmed Covid-19 cases.
