Comelec extends suspension of voter registration

MANILA – The suspension of voter registration has been extended for another month, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) announced on Friday.
Comelec spokesperson James Jimenez said the original schedule of the lifting of the suspension on March 31 has been moved to April 30, in line with the enhanced community quarantine in Luzon.
“Considering the prevailing Enhanced Community Quarantine over the entire Luzon in response to the Covid-19 outbreak, the Commission on Elections has resolved to reschedule the lifting of the nationwide suspension of voter registration from March 31 to April 30, 2020 (Thursday),” he said in a statement.
Jimenez added that the suspension encompasses voter registration conducted in all Comelec offices in cities and municipalities, as well as all satellite registration activities.
“Likewise, the issuance of voter’s certification both in the Main and Field Offices will remain suspended until further notice,” he added.
He also advised the public “to take all the necessary precautions against infection and transmission, as the entire nation battles this crisis.”
On March 10, the poll body suspended the nationwide voter registration due to the coronavirus 2019 (Covid-19) threat.
The voter registration in the country started last January 20 and will run until September 30, 2021, in connection with the May 2022 national and local polls.
