PNP assures aid to kin of cop killed in MisOr grenade blast
MANILA — The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Friday assured benefits to the family of the police officer who died in a grenade explosion inside a college campus in Initao, Misamis Oriental.
“Surviving kin of Police Master Sgt. James Magno will receive death benefits which include PHP250,000 from the President’s social fund, PHP141,000 from the special financial assistance from the PNP, burial benefits worth PHP50,000 and PHP200,000 gratuity from the National Police Commission,” PNP spokesperson, Brig. Gen. Bernard Banac said in a press briefing at Camp Crame.
“As a member of the Public Safety Mutual Benefit Fund, his family may also be entitled to death insurance. These benefits are on top of the estimated PHP15,000 monthly lifetime pension from the PNP, and roughly the same amount of pension for five years from the Napolcom,” he added.
Magno, 46, a member of the Initao municipal police station, died along with Ibrahim Basher, 65, the carrier of a hand grenade that exploded in the covered court of Initao College.
At least 10 students were injured and brought to the hospital, along with Magno’s colleague, Sgt. Alice Balido, who was rushed to a hospital in Cagayan de Oro City.
Banac also commended Magno for sacrificing his life for the benefit of many others.
“Magno made supreme sacrifice by covering the grenade with his own body to save innocent civilian lives. He truly lives up to his sworn duty, to serve and protect even if it costs his life,” Banac said.
“It truly lives up to his sworn duty to serve and protect even if it costs his life. Lt. Gen. Archie Gamboa expresses his condolences to the family of Sergeant Magno, and assures them that they will get full support on financial assistance and benefits, as well as for female police officer, Police Senior Master Sergeant Alice Balido, although wounded, managed to respond courageously and single-handedly contained the threat by shooting the suspect,” he added.
