MANILA — Officers, enlisted and civilian personnel of the Philippine Army (PA) welcomed Miss Earth delegates who visited PA headquarters in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City Monday.

PA spokesperson Lt. Col. Ramon Zagala, in a statement Tuesday, said the visit of the delegates is in line with the “Adopting-a-delegate” partnership of the Carousel Production, Inc. and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

The AFP is hosting the Miss Earth delegates for a day to conduct environmental and cause-oriented activities, he added.

Miss Earth is an international environmental event by Carousel Productions, Inc.

As part of the partnership, the PA welcomed delegates from Spain, Sierra Leone, Korea, Canada, Armenia, Belgium, Poland, South Africa, Hungary, Venezuela, Australia, USA, Chile, Germany, Honduras, Philippines, Singapore and Mauritius on a cleanup drive and tree planting activity held at the Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA).

“Miss Earth chose to partner with the AFP because of its advocacy to do more than their sworn duty. Members of the AFP have been deputized by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to help in the protection of our forests. These men and women in uniform do so much for the people and their environment, so we wanted to meet them,” Sophia Schuck Velasco, of the Carousel Productions Inc., said.

After the said activities, the delegates paid a courtesy call on the PA chief Lt. Gen. Macairog S. Alberto at the Commander’s Lounge which was followed by a quick lesson on gun safety and shooting held at the Army Shooting Range.

“[Visiting the Army] is such a sentimental thing for all of us. It really shows you that no matter what country you are in there is always a sense of safety because people are choosing to protect you and their sacrificing their lives, their time with their loved ones in putting themselves danger’s way to make sure that we have a better quality of life,” Mattea Henderson, from Canada, said.

“We would like to thank Miss Earth for recognizing our efforts in helping protect our environment and for introducing our organization to these delegates from various parts of the world. We hope that when they go back to their home countries, they will bring with them the inspiring stories of our soldiers who serve the people and secure the land in ways that go beyond the battlefield,” Alberto added.
