Manila mayor to rehabilitate Tondo slaughterhouse
MANILA — Manila mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso on Wednesday vowed to rehabilitate the Vitas Slaughter House.
During an inspection, Domagoso described the Tondo butchery “in a state of despair”, stressing that it does not even have a sewage treatment plant and proper cleaning equipment.
“I will not allow this. I cannot tolerate this,” he said.
To ensure the cleanliness and health of the animals and the people in the area, Domagoso said he plans to build four new buildings which include a poultry dressing area, a house compound for the residents, an administration city compound and animal clinic, and a pen for cattle and hogs.
“We will try to come up with a new slaughterhouse, with (an) in-city vertical housing program. It’s going to be community development, that will rise and be operational by next year,” he said.
Domagoso added he would propose regulations to secure the safety and quality of the meat coming from the butchery.
“You cannot take this sitting down, because what we are after is the people of Manila who will buy meat in the wet market,” he said.
