Sotto to poll winners: ‘Public service is public trust’

MANILA — As partial and unofficial election results determine the potential victors of Monday’s mid-term elections, Senate President Vicente Sotto III on Tuesday reminded future elected officials that “public service is a public trust.”

“As we welcome the new set of senators and other local government officials, may we all be reminded that public service is a public trust and we should never forget that it will always be our mandate as elected officials,” Sotto told reporters in a text message.

Sotto said that while there are winners and losers in every election, there are also lessons to be learned from the process.

“In every election there will always be a winner and a defeated foe. It is the lessons we take from whatever is handed to us that makes a difference,” Sotto said.

Unofficial results released by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) showed at least eight of the current top 12 senatorial candidates were endorsed by President Rodrigo Duterte.

The eight Duterte-endorsed Senate aspirants currently at the Top 12 are reelectionist senators Cynthia Villar, Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara, and Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III; former Special Assistant to the President (SAP) Christopher “Bong” Go, Taguig Rep. Pia Cayetano, former Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) chief Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa, Ilocos Norte Governor Imee Marcos, and former Presidential Political Adviser Francis Tolentino.

Also part of the Top 12 are reelectionist senators Grace Poe and Nancy Binay, as well as former senators Lito Lapid and Bong Revilla.
