Cop gunned down along EDSA
MANILA — A police officer was shot dead by motorcycle-riding gunmen along EDSA in San Juan City on Tuesday afternoon.
Police Col. Florendo Quibuyen, deputy director for administration of the Eastern Police District (EPD), identified the victim as Police Senior Master Sergeant Solomon Cugay, who succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds in the body.
According to Quibuyen, Cugay was riding his Yamaha scooter at the EDSA Connecticut southbound lane when a motorcycle closed in on him at about 3:30 p.m.
Witnesses claimed one of the gunmen opened fire first at Cugay’s side before emptying his weapon at different parts of his body.
Recovered from the crime scene were nine empty shells from a caliber .45 pistol.
According to Quibuyen, they are still in the process of conducting a background investigation on Cugay to determine the motive behind his death.
The incident resulted in heavy traffic congestion at the corner of EDSA and Connecticut St., in Barangay Greenhills.
“Traffic is super heavy as Scene of the Crime Operatives are processing the crime scene. Almost half of EDSA was closed so we could process the site of the incident,” Quibuyen said.
