MANILA — President Rodrigo R. Duterte has appointed retired major general Rene Glen Paje as undersecretary of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD).

Duterte signed Paje’s appointment paper on Feb. 15, less than a month after he appointed Brig. Gen. Felicisimo Budiongan as DSWD Undersecretary on Jan. 23 this year.

Paje will be working under DSWD Secretary Rolando Bautista, a former Chief-of-Staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Prior to joining the DSWD, Paje was First Scout Ranger commander during the Marawi siege in 2017.

Paje was also the former deputy chief of staff for civil military operations and member of the Philippine Military Academy Class 1986.

Duterte has repeatedly mentioned his preference to appoint former military and police officials saying they follow orders immediately.

The President also deemed them as “honest and competent”.

Some of the ex-military and police officials in Duterte’s Cabinet include Secretaries Eduardo Año (Interior and Local Government); Roy Cimatu (Environment); Eduardo del Rosario (Housing and Bangon Marawi Task Force chief); and Nicanor Faeldon (Bureau of Corrections chief).

Also in his Cabinet are Rey Guerrero (Customs Commissioner), Isidro Lapeña (Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Director General); and, Glorioso Miranda (Bases Conversion and Development Authority member), among others.
